Meet Mireeka - Pelican Shores Village Manager

Pelican Shores Estate welcomed Village Manager Mireeka Hogan to the community earlier this year. Mireeka has quickly embraced village life — and brought her own energy, experience and warmth to the residents she supports.

Here, Mireeka shares more about her background, what makes Pelican Shores unique, and what residents can expect in the year ahead.

How long have you been working at Pelican Shores?
I started in November and have really enjoyed the role so far. The location is stunning — it honestly feels like I’m working in a holiday destination every day.

What kind of experience did you have before becoming a Village Manager?
Prior to joining Pelican Shores i was working in mental health first aid. I worked for the City of Greater Geelong checking in on staff and supporting their wellbeing. That experience really helps me now — sometimes residents just want a chat and a friendly face, and I’m always happy to be that person.

What’s the community like at Pelican Shores?
It’s a very welcoming environment. There’s a nice energy here — plenty of activities on offer through the Social Club, but no pressure to join in. Residents can get involved as much or as little as they like.

There’s also a strong sense of care — people genuinely look out for each other. It’s the kind of place where neighbours know one another. And yes, there really are pelicans — along with black swans, which come and go throughout the year.

What does a typical day look like for you?
No two days are the same, which is part of what I love about it. In the mornings, the office is open for residents to walk in or book appointments. I usually do a walk-through of the grounds with our team to check on maintenance and appearance, then coordinate with trades if needed.

I also manage the sales of new homes, host private tours, and arrange resident information sessions around health and wellbeing. There’s always something to keep the day interesting.

What are the homes at Pelican Shores like?
There’s a great mix of pre-loved and brand-new homes, and each one has its own personality. Some have beautiful views across the bay, and others are tucked into quiet garden pockets. The new homes come in a range of layouts and price points, so there’s something to suit different lifestyles and budgets.

They’re ideal for downsizers — low-maintenance, secure, and very easy to lock up and leave for those who like to travel. But even for those who stay close to home, the community provides great peace of mind and support.

How do residents stay connected with one another?
The Social Club does a fantastic job organising activities throughout the week. There’s Monday Men’s Lunch, Wednesday Bike Riding, craft club, darts, bowling and even line dancing, which just started up. Happy Hour happens every Friday, and there’s a monthly movie night too.

One of the highlights is the Christmas concert — residents get involved with music and singing, and it’s a great opportunity for families and grandchildren to join in and celebrate.

Have there been any memorable moments since starting the role?
There have been lots of little wins. The pool and gardens received a refresh before summer, and umbrellas were installed to make it more comfortable. I’ve also helped address some resident concerns — like making a section of the dog park safer for a much-loved sausage dog. Sometimes the small things make a big difference.

What are you looking forward to in 2025?
Several new homes have recently arrived, and the roads in front of those builds are being sealed. There are new residents moving in, and supporting them through that transition is something I really enjoy. Every new arrival brings something fresh to the village, and it’s nice to see the community continue to grow in a positive way.

What do visitors usually say when they come to Pelican Shores?
The peace and quiet always stand out. There’s no road noise — just open space and the sound of the water. The boardwalk along the bay is a favourite, and on clear days, you can see all the way to Avalon Airport. During the Airshow, the views are particularly special.

Do you have any advice for people considering downsizing?
Start early. Try putting away items you don’t use often and see how you go living without them. You’ll likely find there’s a lot you don’t really need.

Downsizing isn’t about giving things up — it’s about gaining a simpler, more flexible lifestyle. Handing furniture down to family can also help with the transition and give a better idea of what will work in the new home.
